The History of Sea-Doo® Personal Watercraft

 

Since the 1960s, the manufacturer behind Sea-Doo® personal watercraft, Bombardier Recreational Products, has been a leading innovator in the world of marine recreation. The very first personal watercraft released on the market was actually a Sea-Doo® model! 

 

Over the intervening years, the brand has expanded its lineup to include lots of different models with unique features to improve riders’ comfort and safety while they cruise across the shimmering surface of their favorite lake. The Very First PWC

A Norwegian-American motorcycle enthusiast named Clayton Jacobson II was the mastermind behind the first personal watercraft design. Jacobson had been in a minor motorcycle crash and he wondered whether it might be better to do his crashing on water, rather than on land. So, he set about designing a prototype for an “aquatic motorcycle,” which drew the interest of BRP, who bought the rights to one of his models.

 

The first Sea-Doo® PWC, named after BRP’s Ski-Doo® iconic snowmobile, was released by Bombardier in the 1968s, but it was swiftly withdrawn from the market due to its bulky yellow frame and the difficulty riders had in operating it. So BRP worked at their design and rereleased it in 1988, just as other companies were dipping their toes into the water of personal watercraft designs. By 1995, the Sea-Doo had half of the PWC market share because its sleek profile and high speeds were extremely popular.
