Riding a motorcycle is fun and thrilling, but you’ve got to be practical about it. Safety is paramount for any motorcyclist worth their salt, and if you’re new to riding, you’ll want to know what you need to do to minimize your chances of ending up in an accident or wrecking your bike. Here are the tips you need, courtesy of Team Mancuso Powersports North.

Wear Your Riding Gear

You must always wear proper riding gear when you’re on your motorcycle. A well-fitting, DOT-rated helmet with either a full face mask or a pair of goggles for eye protection, is essential. A riding jacket and pants or a one-piece riding suit in a sturdy material such as denim, leather, or canvas, will protect your skin and joints from abrasions if you slide out. Riding gloves and boots will help you keep your balance on your bike.

Stay Sober & Focused

As with driving, you should never ride a motorcycle while you’re under the influence of alcohol or recreational drugs. Additionally, you may be on certain prescription medications that will make operating heavy machinery (a motorcycle counts!) while you take them.

Make sure that you’re also staying focused while you’re on the road. Don’t let yourself get distracted by anything around you.

Follow the Law

Finally, it’s essential to always obey the posted signage for any road you’re traveling on. This means staying under the speed limit, not weaving through traffic, never riding on the shoulder, and using your signals and lights appropriately. Respect other users of the road, whether they be drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists, or your fellow motorcyclists, and obey the law!
